The importance of playground safety
The Register of Play Inspectors International (RPII) is the main accrediting body worldwide for examining, accrediting, and certifying inflatable, indoor and outdoor play inspectors. RPII also certifies courses that are used by inspectors to make sure playground safety standards are met and adhered to.

Safety standards
It is important playgrounds in New Zealand are safe. Not just for the protection of our children, but also for the protection of your business. Businesses with playgrounds such as early childhood centres, schools, and councils have a part to play when it comes to keeping children safe while using their playgrounds. This is why they must comply with the New Zealand Standard for Playground Equipment and Surfacing, also known as NZS 5828:2015.
Playground safety checklist
The New Zealand Standard for Playground Equipment and Surfacing covers the following areas:
- General safety requirements and test methods
- Additional specific safety requirements and test methods for swings
- Additional specific safety requirements and test methods for slides
- Additional specific safety requirements and test methods for cableways
- Additional specific safety requirements and test methods for carousels
- Additional specific safety requirements and test methods for rocking equipment
- Guidance on installation, inspection, maintenance and operation
- Additional specific safety requirements and test methods for fully enclosed play equipment
- Additional specific safety requirements and test methods for spatial network
- Impact attenuating playground surfacing – determination of critical fall height
